What is Inclusivity? Why is it Important?
At FYI+, we value the beauty of diverse perspectives. Each person brings a unique set of experiences and insights that, when combined, enrich our collective understanding. We believe that everyone deserves equal access to opportunities. Inclusivity helps us remove barriers and create an environment where everyone can participate, contribute, and thrive.
Inclusive spaces bring together people from different backgrounds, allowing collaboration, creativity, and innovation. At FYI+, we encourage teamwork, cooperation, and the exchange of ideas. By embracing inclusivity, we create an environment that inspires fresh solutions and propels us toward transformative change.
Inclusivity is promoted by implementing systems that work for the unhoused, individuals in the justice system, and low-income families. For the unhoused, inclusive systems provide safe shelter, necessities, and support services. In the justice system, inclusivity involves fair practices, rehabilitation programs, and addressing systemic issues. For low-income families, inclusive systems prioritize social support services and policies that reduce economic disparities. By implementing these inclusive systems, we ensure equal opportunities and support for all, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
What does “The Future is Inclusive” mean to FYI+?
Here at FYI+, we are committed to an inclusive community. This means creating a space where the LGBTQIA+ community feels safe, supported, and celebrated. Through programs like the La Vida Project, FYI+ provides a welcoming space that respects and affirms diverse gender identities and sexual orientations. These spaces offer resources, support networks, and educational initiatives that address the unique needs and experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals, promoting acceptance, equality, and advocacy.
Inclusivity also extends to unhoused individuals, recognizing their inherent dignity and working towards addressing the complex issues they face. FYI+ currently provides four housing programs that serve unique needs faced in the community.
The Valley and My Friend’s Place both offer housing support to youth ages 10-17. Crimson Heights helps provide transitional living services to young adults as they transition into adulthood through safe housing and support to help achieve independent living environments. 12th Avenue provides safe and stable housing to low-income families who struggle with homelessness. FYI+ promotes inclusivity by actively involving unhoused individuals in decision-making processes and advocating for policies that promote long-term solutions.
Inclusivity involves ensuring individuals with mental health needs, especially those who may lack resources for adequate care, receive the support and resources they need. FYI+ offers a variety of behavioral health services for children, youth, and families, including outpatient therapy, community-based programs to support healthy parent/child relationships, supportive housing programs, counseling and support services for LGBTQ+ participants, and more.
How Does This Apply to FYI+?
La Vida Project is the embodiment of FYI+’s commitment to inclusivity, specifically focusing on serving the LGBTQIA+ community. It provides a safe and affirming space where youth and young adults can explore their creativity, celebrate their identity, and find validation. Through cooking, art, and dance classes, La Vida Project offers opportunities for self-expression, skill-building, and community connection. We also organize events like Pride Prom, collaborating with Southern New Mexico Pride and P Flage, to empower and honor queer identities.
