Our Pledge to the LGBTQ+ Youth in our Community. Everyone can make a difference!
Families & Youth Innovations Plus (FYI+) is dedicated to celebrating diversity and inclusion, and we are excited to celebrate during June Pride Month in 2024. As a fierce advocate in the community, we have many plans this year to get the party going! We are partnering with PFLAG Las Cruces and Southern New Mexico Pride to bring events and activities for all ages throughout the year. We’re honored to team up with our LGBTQ+ youth and community members to do many amazing things in the community, including participating in the Sun City El Paso Pride Parade on June 29th.
In May, we hosted a Pride Prom for our youth with an Intergalactic theme, showcasing incredible creativity, performances, and dance moves, and creating a space for our local young Drag Performers Adoria, Khaotica, and Leon Neon to shine. This memorable event emphasized the importance of providing inclusive spaces where LGBTQ+ youth can express themselves freely and feel celebrated.

This event was more than just a night of fun; it highlighted the importance of community for LGBTQ+ youth. By creating a safe and inclusive space, we allowed attendees to express themselves openly and build strong support networks. Events like Pride Prom can help empower young people to become leaders and advocates and can foster a sense of belonging and acceptance that is crucial for their development and resilience.
Our June events in collaboration with Las Cruces PFLAG, continues this commitment to community and support:
- June 7th, 6:00 PM: Screening of “Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine” at Rio Grande Theatre.
- June 17th, 6:00 PM: Pride Yoga at Pioneer Women’s Park.
- June 17th, 6:00 PM: Intergenerational Experience Sharing Panel (snacks and drinks provided) at La Vida Project at 118 S Main ST.

FYI+ strives to honor Pride in our community and amplify the voices of our youth. This month, our focus is on advocating for students in schools and empowering them to express themselves freely. We will explore existing safeguards that protect youth in educational settings, actions to follow in case of an incident, and the significance of voting.
What is Title IX?
The protection of LGBTQ+ students comes from the Title IX of Education Amendments. This was passed in 1972 and has been a cornerstone of protection and support for our youth. It says: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” Initially focused on gender equality, Title IX now also protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
It’s important to recognize that protection for our LGBTQ+ students is still an issue for which we need to advocate. Laws in individual states are lacking, as shown in the diagram from the Movement and Advancement project Safe School Laws.

Protections Under Title IX for LGBTQ+ Students
Title IX makes sure you’re covered in all the important areas:
- Protection Against Bullying and Harassment:
- Schools must step in to stop any bullying or harassment aimed at you because of your sexual orientation or gender identity. This includes physical harassment, verbal abuse, and cyberbullying. Stand tall and know you’re protected!
- Equal Access to Facilities:
- You have the right to use facilities that match your gender identity. No more awkward moments or being forced into spaces where you don’t feel comfortable. Your school must accommodate you properly.
- Participation in Activities:
- Want to join a sports team or club that aligns with your gender identity? Go for it! Title IX ensures you can participate in all activities and sports programs. Get out there and shine!
- Name and Pronoun Usage:
- Schools need to respect the names and pronouns you use. This means they must update records and call you by your chosen name and pronouns in all interactions. It’s all about respect and recognition!

If you ever feel your rights under Title IX are being trampled on, here’s what you can do:
- Document the Incident:
- Keep a record of what happened, including dates, times, locations, and witnesses. Having everything written down can be super helpful if you need to take action.
- Report the Incident:
- Talk to your school’s Title IX coordinator about what’s going on. Every school that receives federal funding has a coordinator to handle these complaints.
- File a Formal Complaint:
- If your school doesn’t address the issue appropriately, file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR). They’ll investigate and make sure things get sorted out.
- Seek Support:
- Reach out to LGBTQ+ advocacy groups for help and advice. National organizations like GLSEN and the ACLU are great resources, along with groups in our state like Equality New Mexico.
Resources we provide to our LGBTQ+ Youth and Community:

- Outpatient Therapy: We offer outpatient therapy to individuals of all ages, couples, and families.

We also offer dance classes to adults 18+. La Vida Project offers free resources such as a clothing closet, food pantry, events dedicated to educating the community, a safe & affirming place to hang out, and study hours and tutoring.
- My Friend’s Place (MFP): MFP is a transitional living home for youth ages 16 1⁄2 – 23, who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ (LGBTQ+), and who are at-risk of, or experiencing homelessness. Considerations may be made for youth who are experiencing homelessness and who identify as allies to the LGBTQ+ community.
The Power of Your Vote

It’s important to vote and learn about the candidates who are running in national elections, but also those running local races. Their decisions affect the lives of youth and young students most directly. Even more, they affect you, your family, your friends, and your chosen families. It’s good to ask yourself what you’re passionate about and what changes you’d like to see in your community, when approaching the ballot.
To register to vote in New Mexico click this link, and to see the ballot for this election year, go to the 2024 Primary Election Candidate information. When evaluating candidates, consider their stance on issues that matter most to you, such as education, healthcare, environmental policies, and social justice. Engaging in discussions with peers and community members can also provide valuable insights and perspectives.
Voting is not just a right; it’s a powerful way to influence the future. By staying informed and participating in the electoral process, you contribute to shaping a community that reflects your values and priorities. Remember, every vote counts, and your voice matters. So, take the time to research, discuss, and, most importantly, vote!
Conclusion:
Title IX is here to make sure you can pursue your education free from discrimination and harassment. Knowing your rights and how to protect them is key to creating a safe, inclusive school environment. Remember, you’re not alone, and there are plenty of resources and allies ready to support you in standing up for your rights. And don’t forget – voting for supportive leaders is crucial to keeping these protections alive and well
